Digital collage using Adobe Illustrator

“Self-portrait” assumes that the artist recognizes themselves in the work. I tried to debunk that preconception in my self-portrait. That is why I chose to escape to an abstract representation of myself: particularly one that originates from the shapes of the South Korean flag, which defines my ethnicity. I wear the face of an Asian and my parents are indubitably Korean, but I do not call South Korea my home, and therefore, I am comfortable with deconstructing the Korean flag. I cannot grasp nor apprehend a concrete understanding of my identity, so my patterns deform the flag and reform an abstract collage. It is hard to understand my identity that has been molded into various cultures due to my nomadic upbringing. The strict horizontal lines represent my attempt to make sense of my past, looking beyond horizons of who I could possibly be.
